The son of a naval officer, William J. Owens was born was born in Alabama in 1932. After growing up on several naval stations, he served three years in the Army during the Korean War and earned his Master`s Degree in Journalism from Northwestern University. He resides near Santa Barbara where he teaches creative writing and is working on a volume about submarine warfare in WWII.
