Fred L. Bell served in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army. In the Army he was in law enforcement and retired in 1992 with more than twenty years of service. While assigned to Fort Richardson, Alaska, he conceived the idea of developing a book about Army museums. His interest in history and the military led him to compile this information about Army museums. Between August 1992 and November 1993 he visited all fifty-two U.S. Army museums and collected the information for this book.
